Chronic Pain & Inflammation
Chronic pain last beyond 3-6 months and often originates from sources, including injury, disease, or an unknown etiology. It can disrupt an individual’s quality of life, resulting in physical limitations, feelings of depression, and social isolation.
Inflammation refers to the natural process our bodies undergo in order to protect itself from harmful entities, such as stress, illness, infection, injury, or toxic substances. As cellular damage occurs, our bodies release chemical reactions that help fight off infections, generate pain, and increase blood flow to the area that needs healing.
Chronic Pain and inflammation can prevent the body’s tissues from repairing, may destroy healthy cells, and can potentially impact work performance, sleep patterns, personal relationships, and accelerate the ageing process.
Most notoriously, many are often treated with medications that masks the problem and lead to unwanted complications.
The good news is, gentler treatment protocols, such as Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN) have emerged to help reduce pain and inflammation. But what exactly is low dose naltrexone, and how can it help you achieve pain relief, improve your mood, and obtain a good night’s sleep.
Why Use LDN?
Since the 1980s, research has developed a vast amount of information on the many potential benefits of low-dose naltrexone (LDN). Low-dose naltrexone (LDL) is used off-label in the treatment of pain and inflammation caused by autoimmune diseases by modulating the immune system and reducing inflammation through its interaction with opioid receptors – promotes the body’s natural pain-relieving mechanisms.
LDL is an opioid antagonist that is traditionally used at a higher dose to treat opiate and alcohol addiction. Extensive research over the past 10 years have shown that LDL exhibits novel and paradoxical effects in treating a variety of conditions to include chronic pain and inflammation as a result of autoimmune diseases, musculoskeletal conditions, and neuropathic pain. Yet, it is well-tolerated safe, yet an underused treatment.
How Does LDN Work?
Used in small doses, LDN has been a game changer for many suffering with debilitation symptoms of pain. The effects of LDN are analgesia and anti-inflammatory. When taken, it attaches to the opioid receptors in the brain and temporarily blocks endorphins from attaching. This signals the body to increase production of its own endorphins, which helps orchestrate the activity of stem cells, macrophages, natural killer cells, T and B cells and other immune cells, to aid with improving immune function.
